Wireless Hot Spots For Your Smart Phone

Remember when some long years ago wireless technology only existed on the movie and TV screen, and we all just wished, if we could have it in our life time? Well, in that case, you shouldn’t be surprised by my unabashed amazement with the development of wireless technology and especially wireless hot spots. To think that I can walk into a local coffee shop or library, turn on my laptop computer or even better my smart cell phone or PDA, and instantly be able to surf the internet at a relatively high speed strikes me as one of the most obviously advantages of the recent advancements in wireless technology.

This year I picked up a smart cell phone that is equipped with wireless technology, WiFi, allowing me to use a stripped-down version of Internet Explorer to access information through wireless hot spots just like laptops and desktop computers. With my little wireless-enabled smart cell phone I can hold the entire internet in the palm of my hand, allowing me to communicate, watch videos, check my email, text message friends, and so on. This comes in handy all the time, whether I’m out for lunch or dinner with friends and we want to know what movies are playing to checking my email while waiting for my bus (at a bus stop that’s conveniently located near a library’s wireless hot spot) and taking care of business on the go.

One of the drawbacks of wireless technology is that wireless-enabled devices like my smart phone or most people’s laptops need to be fairly near to a wireless hot spot in order for the connection to be established. Since these wireless hot spots are so widely spread yet, many people still have to be roaming around, looking for good connections. Many different businesses are picking up on the trend, offering wireless hot spots in coffee shops, restaurants, and retail stores. The one everyone obviously knows is the Starbucks wireless hot spot, provided by T-Mobile. The other one, which is my favorite, since it is free and also pretty wide spread, is Panera’s wireless hot spot.

Many businesses are nice enough to provide wireless hot spots for free, though it’s usually a good practice to patronize these places if you use their wireless connection to encourage them to keep their access free. So, make sure to order something next time you go to Panera to use their WiFi service. Libraries can be great for wireless hot spot, as can some coffee shops. Some chains offer free wireless at all of their locations, making it pretty easy to track down free wireless hot spots. Some websites even keep track of these free hotspots, working with Mapquest or Google maps to provide maps of free hot spots.

A few other businesses, especially coffee shops, offer wireless connections with purchases, but most of the other wireless hot spots require payment to access the service. This can come either through a subscription to the service provider or through a credit card payment, though if you’re not a subscriber these hot spots can get expensive quite quickly.

Overall, I’m very happy that these wireless hot spots are spreading out at a very rapid speed. It’s great that I can do the communication part, suck as emails, on the go, so I can be more productive, in my office. I also have my eye on the iPhone from Apple, which is available form Cingular Wireless. That is a great product. Way to go Apple. And while many companies will try to copy the iPhone, as they have been copying Apple products for long years, I believe iPhone will be the one and only, when it comes to wireless mobile communications.
